If you shared files or folders with “specific people” links to outside collaborators, those links may now be broken. The affected users will see error messages or be unable to open the files, even if they previously had access.

How to Spot Affected Shares

• External contacts report they can’t open a file or folder you shared.
• The link was originally sent to a non-company email address (such as Gmail, Yahoo, or another business domain).
• The link was set up as a “specific people” share rather than a “anyone with the link” share.

Restoring Access: Two Practical Options

• Invite the user as a guest: Add the external collaborator as a guest in your Microsoft 365 tenant. They will receive an invitation to join as a guest (an Entra B2B account). Once accepted, you can reshare the file or folder with their guest account.
• Reshare using a different link type: If appropriate for the sensitivity of the content, you can create a new link with broader access (such as “anyone with the link” or “people in your organization and guests”). Always consider your organization’s security policies before using less restrictive sharing options.
