How to Confirm Staff Are Ready for Entra SSPR Enforcement

How to Confirm Staff Are Ready for Entra SSPR Enforcement

Microsoft Entra will require users to have explicitly registered authentication methods for self-service password reset (SSPR) starting September 7, 2026. This change means that only methods users have directly registered themselves will be available for password resets. Internal IT teams need to confirm that all staff have completed registration to prevent lockouts when enforcement begins.

Why This Matters to Small Organizations

If users have not registered authentication methods themselves, they may be unable to reset their passwords after enforcement starts. This can lead to productivity loss, increased IT support tickets, and frustration for both users and IT staff. Taking action now ensures a smooth transition and uninterrupted access for everyone.

What Is Changing?

Currently, some authentication methods may be inherited or pre-configured by administrators. With the upcoming enforcement, only methods that users have personally registered—such as phone numbers, authenticator apps, or email addresses—will be valid for SSPR.

For small organizations, this means reviewing user registration status and prompting any unregistered users to complete the process before the deadline.

Recommended Steps for Internal IT

  • Review Registration Reports: Use the Microsoft Entra admin portal to access SSPR registration status reports. Identify users who have not registered authentication methods.
  • Notify Unregistered Users: Communicate with staff who need to complete registration. Provide clear instructions and deadlines.
  • Provide Guidance: Share step-by-step instructions or a short training session on how to register authentication methods, such as phone numbers or the Microsoft Authenticator app.
  • Monitor Progress: Regularly check reports to track registration completion and follow up as needed.
  • Test the Process: Encourage users to test self-service password reset to confirm their methods are working.
  • Document Procedures: Update internal documentation to reflect the new requirements and support ongoing compliance.

How NIS Helps Manage the Transition

NIS supports your organization by monitoring SSPR registration status, providing user communication templates, and offering training resources. We help ensure that all staff are registered with valid authentication methods before the enforcement date, reducing the risk of account lockouts and minimizing disruption. Our team is available to assist with reporting, user outreach, and best practices for secure password management.

Taking these steps now will help your organization avoid last-minute issues and keep your team productive. If you have questions about Microsoft Entra or need support with user registration, NIS is here to help you prepare for the upcoming changes.
